Harry Smith was born under an unlucky star... a memoir by @1923Memoir

1923: A Memoir
by Harry Leslie Smith
Buy on Amazon

To say that Harry Smith was born under an unlucky star would be an understatement. Born in England in 1923, Smith chronicles the tragic story of his early life in this first volume of his memoirs. He presents his family’s early history—their misfortunes and their experiences of enduring betrayal, inhumane poverty, infidelity, and abandonment.

1923: A Memoir presents the story of a life lyrically described, capturing a time both before and during World War II when personal survival was dependent upon luck and guile. During this time, failure insured either a trip to the workhouse or burial in a common grave. Brutally honest, Smith’s story plummets to the depths of tragedy and flies up to the summit of mirth and wonder, portraying real people in an uncompromising, unflinching voice.

1923: A Memoir tells of a time and place when life, full of raw emotion, was never so real.

All her life, Billie Jean Sloane, a charismatic, exquisite, small-town beauty, has been desired and spoiled by men. At sixteen, following a tragedy involving her first husband--"the love of her life"--she is heartbroken. Unable to forgive or forget, her parents take drastic measures to keep them apart.

The vain, yet innocent, Billie Jean--one of seven siblings--is swept from her humble beginnings at 1106 Grand Boulevard in the Midwestern town of Hamilton, Ohio to a luxurious life-style in Phoenix, Arizona and other fascinating locales... through a World War II marriage and a Mafia scare in Sacramento, California... to vicious seduction at Lake Tahoe... to the fabulous wealth of the "San Francisco Sinclairs," real estate and jewelry tycoons. Then back to her hometown to search for her first husband.

This story takes you through Billie Jean's seven marriages and sixty-four years--1933 to 1997--of happiness and tragedy. Always searching for her first love and her childhood, the enchanting child/woman captivates many men along the way, each wealthier than the one before ... each sending her scurrying back to 1106 Grand Boulevard, a trail of broken hearts in her wake.

1106 Grand Boulevard is the story of passions that last a lifetime; of family love and betrayal; of spousal abuse and sadistic child abuse; a story of Billie Jean's desperate search for happiness, self-worth, and maturity ... a story of people needing people and people using people.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

D. E. M. Emrys. Author. Soldier by day, Soldier by night - Writer in between. Knows war to write war.
David Emrys, known as D to his friends, is a serving soldier and author. He has clearance to know more than he should, but not the sense to know better. Leaving education with no more than a fifteen year olds understanding of English Literature, D's storytelling craft is self-taught.
Growing up with the heroic tales written by authors such as David Gemmell and James Barclay, D was inspired to write stories of his own. After joining the army D used his free time to focus on his dream of sharing shelf-space with his idols.
D testifies to the fact that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword - but swords make for better letter-openers. He lives where the army send him, but home is in Chelmsford with his fiancée. They say that behind every great man there is a woman pulling the strings, but she lets him dance to his own song whilst being the perfect partner in step. D claims that his books would not have been written without her.
David Emrys is not his real name.
Nor is D.

Can a Man or Woman Really Swear off Love? - Crazy for You by @mandymroth

CRAZY FOR YOU
by Mandy M Roth as Kennedy Kovit
Contemporary Western Small Time Romance
$5.96 on Amazon / 4.5 stars / 4 reviews*

Meredith is home again, ready to settle down in her small town and open the antique shop she's always dreamed of owning. She's had enough of powerful men trying to use her and wants to simply fade away from the dating scene and enjoy life. When she runs into the diner's new owner, she quickly realizes her master plan might have been premature.

Landry left life in the fast lane for life on Main Street. He's sworn off women for a while. They're nothing but trouble. Meredith is no exception. In fact, he's pretty sure she's not quite right in the head, but for some reason he gets her offbeat, whimsical behavior and craves being around it, not to mention she's smokin' hot and oozes sex appeal. It's hard to fight nature's pull even while chanting, "I've sworn off women."

Rating: This full-length contemporary novel contains explicit sex scenes told with frank, graphic language. The book has a quirky heroine who is not above bedazzling her way through life, even though she can't seem to pretty-up her past and an ex-uptight hero who learns to laugh all while breaking his number one rule--no more women.

"My dog Pete is too lazy to go on walks most days" - Author @PMorrisonYork

What is your name?
Paul Morrison

Tell us about you.

I live in York, England with my wife Andrea and  our three children.
I am a big Swindon Town Football club fan, and in the summer I play cricket for a local team.
The White Swan is my first novel, but hopefully there will be more to come

Tell us about your book.

Johnny Jordan is a lovable psychic entertainer, wowing audiences whilst boosting his own ever growing ego! When a grieving family, in his home town of York, contact him to speak with their murdered loved one from beyond the grave he can’t help but get involved. Way over his head lacking any psychic ability and facing the biggest performance of his career, he wades in believing he can solve the murder that has baffled the police for over a year. Risking not only himself but also his young, but far more able, cousin, the mystery holds a twist that neither of them could predict leaving Johnny Jordan in mortal danger.
This is a light hearted modern day mystery written in a traditional style.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was having a discussion with my wife, who said that a psychic who investigates murders would make a good story.  I thought that it would be pointless, as from the readers perspective, all they would have to do would be to consult with the spirit world.  However I thought that a fake psychic who was desperately trying to solve a murder, while making out that he was receiving messages from the other side would be a more interesting premise.

What can readers expect when they open your book?

A light hearted, but interesting story featuring a well rounded believable hero, in a fake psychic kind of a way.  There are some nice one liners between the two main characters and some twists and turns along the way.

What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as a writer?

Finishing the book.  But I also like the way that Johnny the main character comes across, even though he's not a hero in the true sense, people say that they found themselves rooting for him to solve the murder, and get the glory

Who is your favorite author and why?

Lots and lots I'm afraid, I really like the Shardlake series by CJ Sansom, and obviously Ian Rankin's Rebus books.  My all time favourite though is To Kill a Mockingbird.

Do you have any suggestions for writers just starting out?

The only advice I would give is to ignore all advice from other people, and just write the book that is in your heart, and everything else will take care of itself afterwards.

What is your favorite quote?

Heaven knows I'm miserable now ~Morrisey

If you could exchange lives with any of your characters for a day which character would you choose and why?

My wife tells me that Johnny Jordan is a psychic entertainer version of myself, so it would be dead easy for me, unless he was giving a show, the pressure of a live performance would terrify me though.

If your book was made into a movie which actor/actress would play which character(s)?

As Johnny is similar to me it would have to be Brad Pitt or some other Hollywood heartthrob.

If the book being featured is part of a series, tell us more about it.

I am writing the second book at present, in which Johnny gets a television series on the strength of solving the first case.

What does writing mean to you?

Writing is the ultimate release when it's going well, and torture when the words aren't flowing, but it's like everything else, there is good and bad days.

Tell us 5 random things about you the person, not the author:

1) My dog Pete is too lazy to go on walks most days
2) I've broken one of my fingers twice playing cricket
3) My Grandfather played professional football for Swindon Town
4) I got chased by a giant bull Sea Lion on the Galapagos
5) I have showered witha Government Minister
